Egyptian Blue Lotus: The Original Sacred Flower
When most people think of lotus tea, they think of the ancient Egyptians floating it in goblets of wine during festival nights. The flower they used was a close relative of our Blue Lotus — and our Egyptian Blue Lotus – Dried Flower is the closest modern equivalent available.
What Makes Egyptian Blue Lotus Different?
While our standard Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) is the most widely available variety, Egyptian Blue Lotus (Nymphaea nouchali) comes from a different botanical lineage. The differences you'll notice:
- Taste: Egyptian lotus brews to a deeper, more earthy flavor compared to the lighter floral notes of standard Blue Lotus
- Potency: Many users find it slightly more potent, particularly for dream work and deep relaxation
- Color: The dried flowers appear more golden in color, with petals that unfurl to a brighter blue-green when steeped
Ancient Egyptian Uses
The ancient Egyptians didn't just use lotus for relaxation. It was woven into every aspect of their spiritual and social life:
- Religious ceremonies: Priests consumed lotus tea before and during temple rituals
- Social gatherings: Flowers were floated in wine at banquets — the "lotus banquet" was a legendary cultural event
- Meditation and prayer: Monks and ascetics used lotus for quieting the mind during extended prayer sessions
How to Brew Egyptian Blue Lotus
Our Egyptian Blue Lotus comes as whole dried flowers. Here's our recommended brewing method:
- Prepare the flower: Tear the dried flower apart gently to expose the inner petals and stamen
- Measure: Use half a flower per cup for your first brew. One full flower for experienced users
- Steep: Pour 200 ml boiling water over the flower pieces and steep for 7–10 minutes
- Enhance: Optional — pair with honey for sweetness, or combine with a cup of green tea for a daytime variant
Egyptian lotus can also be re-steeped. The second extraction will be about half the strength of the first, but still pleasant and enjoyable.
Egyptian vs Standard Blue Lotus
Wondering which to choose? Here's a quick guide:
- Choose standard Blue Lotus (our Blue lotus - Dried Flower) if you want a lighter, more accessible introduction
- Choose Egyptian Blue Lotus if you're an experienced user or looking for a more intense, traditional experience
- Try both — many of our customers enjoy alternating between the two depending on the time of day and their mood
