Egyptian Blue Lotus: The Original Sacred Flower

Published June 17, 2026 · 5 min read

When most people think of lotus tea, they think of the ancient Egyptians floating it in goblets of wine during festival nights. The flower they used was a close relative of our Blue Lotus — and our Egyptian Blue Lotus – Dried Flower is the closest modern equivalent available.

What Makes Egyptian Blue Lotus Different?

While our standard Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) is the most widely available variety, Egyptian Blue Lotus (Nymphaea nouchali) comes from a different botanical lineage. The differences you'll notice:

Ancient Egyptian Uses

The ancient Egyptians didn't just use lotus for relaxation. It was woven into every aspect of their spiritual and social life:

How to Brew Egyptian Blue Lotus

Our Egyptian Blue Lotus comes as whole dried flowers. Here's our recommended brewing method:

  1. Prepare the flower: Tear the dried flower apart gently to expose the inner petals and stamen
  2. Measure: Use half a flower per cup for your first brew. One full flower for experienced users
  3. Steep: Pour 200 ml boiling water over the flower pieces and steep for 7–10 minutes
  4. Enhance: Optional — pair with honey for sweetness, or combine with a cup of green tea for a daytime variant

Egyptian lotus can also be re-steeped. The second extraction will be about half the strength of the first, but still pleasant and enjoyable.
